On Site Research

The Library Reading Room is open for research visits by appointment during the Museum’s regular operating hours and is subject to staff availability. Research appointments must be made with at least two weeks advance notice to the Archives Assistant.

Remote Research

The Archives Assistant is available to assist researchers who are unable to visit the archives in person. When leaving your message please provide as much detail as possible regarding your specific research topic.

The first 15 minutes of research are conducted free of charge. If requested, additional research can be conducted at a rate of $25/ hour, measured in 15 minute increments. Additional reproduction fees will apply for any photocopies, photographs, or ship plans that are requested and can be found on the Photograph & Copying Services page.

Research Policy & Requests

This is a notice that some manuscripts, records, and photographs are restricted for preservation purposes and therefore unavailable for reproduction purposes. The Director of Collections and the Archives Assistant also reserve the right to deny any reproduction requests that may cause irreparable damage to an artifact based on its condition or the material of which it is made. For example, some ship plans are printed on material that easily tears, especially if it’s been repeatedly folded in the past. An item like this probable already has some tears and rather than risk further damage we will restrict it from being copied.
