USS Robalo
USS Robalo (SS 273) was the 9th submarine built in Manitowoc, the 2nd to last in the original Navy contract for ten submarines. After she was commissioned in September 1943, she headed to the Pacific Ocean and served on two war patrols. On June 22, 1944, Robalo left Fremantle, Australia for her 3rd war patrol. USS Robalo was sunk on July 26, 1944, off the east coast of Balabac Island, Philippines. It is believed she struck an enemy mine. Four crewmen were able to escape the sinking vessel and swim ashore, but they were captured by the Japanese and never heard from again.
In May 2019, the wreck of USS Robalo was discovered, and her identity was confirmed by the Navy in February 2020.
