SUMMARY:Think & Drink - Spectacular Science: Weather & Historic Meteorology of Northeast Wisconsin
DESCRIPTION:Sudden summer severe storms and frigid\, lake-effect blizzards…The weather of Northeast Wisconsin is as unpredictable as it is powerful. Why does our region experience such extreme\, four-season swings\, and how have historical weather events shaped our communities? From the Neville Public Museum’s Spectacular Science: Weather exhibit\, this program explores the unique meteorological forces that create our climate and the science behind Wisconsin’s most dramatic historic weather events. \nJoin museum curator James Peth as he uncovers the science and historic storms that have defined Northeast Wisconsin’s skies. \nAdmission is free and open to the public\, with refreshments available for purchase. Each event features a specialty cocktail. \nDoors and cash bar open at 6:00 PM. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase at the limited bar. He holds a BS in Biology with minors in Captive Wildlife Management and Museum Studies from the University of Wisconsin–Stevens Point\, and a MA in Museum Studies from the University of San Francisco. His curatorial work bridges science\, natural history\, and regional story-telling. \nThe Wisconsin Maritime Museum is located at 75 Maritime Drive\, Manitowoc\, WI 54220. You can learn what it was really like living and working on a submarine with 80 other crewmembers for over two months at a time from someone who experienced a diesel boat just like our very own COBIA. This two- to three-hour tour focuses more on personal stories\, so feel free to ask Greg all of your submarine questions! \nThe cost is $35 for non-members and $30 for WMM Members. Space is limited\, so reservations are required. Tickets are NON-REFUNDABLE. SUMMARY:Think & Drink Series: Armistice Day Blizzard of 1940
DESCRIPTION:November 11th and 12th\, 1940\, were normal\, mild fall days in the middle of an equally mild\, warm season. With temperatures in the 50s\, people took advantage of the nice weather hunting and just enjoying the weather. However\, conditions changed rapidly as a severe blizzard gripped the Midwest\, dropping more than a foot of snow in places and leaving unprecedented destruction in its wake.\nJoin speaker Edward Hopkins as he uses the 1940 Armistice Day Blizzard that created havoc across Wisconsin as a classic example of quite a few early winter storms that pass across the Upper Midwest and western Great Lakes during the 2nd week of November.  While he will describe some major features of that storm\, Dr. Hopkins will also talk about some other memorable storms called the “Gales of November.”\nAbout the speaker:\nEdward Hopkins\, PHD\, is the Assistant State Climatologist for Wisconsin. He has deep ties to weather and climate education and research in Wisconsin\, having taught meteorology courses at the University of Wisconsin—Madison and contributing to the State Climatology Office for over 20 years. He co-authored Wisconsin’s Weather and Climate with Professor Joseph M.
