SUMMARY:August's Think & Drink: The Great Molasses Flood & Boston's Waterfront
DESCRIPTION:On January 15th\, 1919\, a massive industrial storage tank containing 2.3 million gallons of molasses suddenly ruptured in Boston’s North End. Moving at 35 miles per hour\, a 25-foot wave of sticky\, sweet syrup ripped through the streets\, destroying buildings\, crushing infrastructure\, and claiming the lives of 21 people in one of the nation’s unlikeliest disasters. \nJoin Boston University historian and recent PhD graduate Genna Kane\, as she explores the environmental and social legacy of this tragic event. Genna’s program traces how this structural catastrophe forced a major transformation in safety regulations\, building codes\, and the physical shape of Boston’s working-class waterfront. She tells a story of remarkable local resilience that continues to shape our urban spaces today. \nGenna Kane\, PhD\, is a recent graduate of the American & New England Studies Program at Boston University. An expert in urban history\, historic preservation\, and environmental design\, her work focuses on the evolution of Boston’s environment\, from its industrial past to its climate-resilient future. \nAdmission is free and open to the public\, with refreshments available for purchase. Each event features a specialty cocktail. \nDoors and cash bar open at 6:00 PM. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase at the limited bar. The presentation and livestream will begin at 6:30 PM. To access the livestream of this event\, please register here: https://forms.gle/5HsmTigfWedbueUn6 \nThe Wisconsin Maritime Museum is located at 75 Maritime Drive\, Manitowoc\, WI 54220. This program is funded in part by a grant from the Green Bay Packers Foundation. For more information about this talk and upcoming events at the Museum\, please visit our website: wisconsinmaritime.org \nPlease note: although these events incorporate a thematic drink\, there is no requirement or emphasis on alcohol consumption. SUMMARY:Book Talk - Many Voices: Building Erie\, the Canal that Changed America
DESCRIPTION:There’s a fascinating\, often overlooked connection between the 200-year-old Erie Canal and the rapid development of Great Lakes shipping and the growth of America’s heartland.\n\nThis epic 363-mile waterway across rugged upstate New York was designed to connect the Great Lakes and the Atlantic. An improbable engineering marvel of the nineteenth century\, the Erie Canal was completed in 1825 and immediately began to transform the flow of American history. This waterway connection between booming New York City’s harbor and the Great Lakes would help create skyrocketing growth in Midwest farms and cities as varied as Milwaukee\, Green Bay\, Chicago\, and Duluth.\n\n\nLaurie Lawlor is the author of full-color\, award-winning nonfiction\, Many Voices\, Building Erie\, the Canal that Changed America (Holiday House) that provides a deep-dive into the lives and contributions of overlooked women\, men\, and children who worked on the canal. Her discussion will spotlight how the canal helped change Wisconsin and the Midwest. She will explore not only how the canal was created\, but also the ways in which it impacted the environment and the lives of the Haudenosaunee whose homeland has centered on upstate New York for centuries. This lively discussion will also highlight how the canal promoted the flow of mail\, books\, magazines\, finished goods\, resources\, and ideas about social justice\, technology\, religion\, and education across the United States—much like today’s Internet.\n\n\nWhen: Sunday\, August 30th\, 2026 @ 1:00 p.m. – 2:00 p.m.\nWhere: WMM Riverview Room\nAdmission: Free\nWhat: 45-minute book talk\, followed by Q&A and signing
