SUMMARY:Think & Drink Series: Fatal Crossing - The Disappearance of NWA Flight 2501
DESCRIPTION:On June 23rd\, 1950\, Northwest Airlines Flight 2501\, carrying 58 passengers\, vanished over Lake Michigan. Despite intensive searches at the time\, the wreck was never found\, and the cause of the disaster remained one of aviation’s greatest unsolved mysteries. \nJoin author and historian Valerie van Heest\, who will be presenting virtually\, as she recounts her decades-long quest to solve the mystery of America’s “lost airliner.” Working in partnership with the Michigan Shipwreck Research Association and renowned author Clive Cussler\, Valerie’s team discovered numerous shipwrecks\, but the plane remained unseen. However\, this search led the team to an entirely different discovery: the stories of witnesses\, personnel\, and families left behind. \nAbout the speaker: Valerie van Heest is the 2025 Great Lakes Historian of the Year—the first woman to receive this honor—and an inductee in the Women Divers Hall of Fame. An author of eight books and a veteran of over 800 lectures\, Valerie has dedicated her career to underwater archaeology and museum exhibit design\, to bring submerged history back to the surface. \nDoors and cash bar open at 6:00 PM. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase at the limited bar. The presentation and livestream will begin at 6:30 PM. To access the livestream of this event\, please register here: https://forms.gle/VZ7W4Nj2bcvaEKfi7 \nPlease note: Although these events incorporate a thematic drink pairing\, there is no requirement or emphasis on alcohol consumption. If you or a loved one is struggling with alcohol and/or drug abuse\, please reach out to the National Substance Abuse Helpline at 1-800-662-HELP.

SUMMARY:Think & Drink Series: The Eastland Story
DESCRIPTION:On July 24th\, 1915\, the SS Eastland was docked in the Chicago River\, filled with thousands of Western Electric employees headed for a company picnic. In a matter of minutes\, the “Speed Queen of the Lakes” capsized while still tied to the dock\, resulting in the unfortunate deaths of 844 people. To this day\, this was the greatest loss of life in a single shipwreck in Great Lakes history. \nJoin Todd Gordon for a deep dive into the service and final moments of this steamer\, from its launch in 1903 to its second life as the USS Wilmette. This presentation is a journey through the “six degrees of separation” that connect the Eastland to some of the most famed figures and events in American history. \nAbout the speaker: \nTodd Gordon is the president of the Wisconsin Marine Historical Society and serves on the Advisory Council for the Wisconsin Shipwreck Coast National Marine Sanctuary. A lifelong history enthusiast and former SCUBA diver who has explored the wrecks of Door County\, Todd Gordon spent 43 years at We Energies before “retiring” to co-manage the historic Port Washington 1860 Light Station. He is a dedicated researcher committed to preserving the maritime legacy of the Great Lakes. \nDoors and cash bar open at 6:00 PM. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase at the limited bar. The presentation and livestream will begin at 6:30 PM. SUMMARY:Think & Drink Series: The Peshtigo Fire
DESCRIPTION:We invite you to join us for our March Think & Drink program\, where ecologist and research scientist with the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources\, Jed Meunier\, will take us through the harrowing night of October 8th\, 1871. The Peshtigo Fire became the deadliest wildfire in recorded history. \nJed Meunier\, using tree-ring and fire-scar evidence\, challenges the belief that logging alone caused the disaster. In this presentation\, he shows that extreme drought\, regional fires\, and winds created the conditions for a catastrophe. This talk explores what the event can teach us about wildfire risk today and into the future. \nThis installment will take place on Thursday\, March 5th at 6:30pm\, at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum. \nAdmission is free and open to the public\, with refreshments available for purchase. Each event features a specialty cocktail. \nDoors and bar open at 6:00 PM. Both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages will be available for purchase at the limited bar. The talk and livestream will begin at 6:30 PM. To access the livestream of this event\, please register here: https://forms.gle/FK8U46gDM6Rwsdb47 \nThe Wisconsin Maritime Museum is located at 75 Maritime Drive\, Manitowoc\, WI. For more information about this talk and upcoming events at the Museum\, please visit our website: wisconsinmaritime.org \nPlease note: although these events incorporate a thematic drink\, there is no requirement or emphasis on alcohol consumption. If you or a loved one is struggling with alcohol and/or drug abuse\, please reach out to the national substance abuse helpline at 1-800-662-HELP.
