Saturday Learning Series: Side Scan Sonar Workshop

May 21 @ 6:00 am - 10:00 am

Please join us Saturday, May 21 for our FREE Saturday Learning Series event, Sidescan Sonar Workshop: An Underwater Archeology Survey of the Manitowoc River. Join maritime historian and sidescan expert Brendon Baillod for a day of learning and exploration. The workshop will begin with a classroom component during which we will learn about sidescan sonar technology and its use for shallow water archeology, as well as its use for finding lost ships in deep water. Brendon will explain how to interpret modern sidescan sonar readouts, show common interference anomalies, and explain how to get optimal acoustical imaging results.
The talk will be held 11:00 am – 12:00 pm in the museum. Following the classroom component, we will have a fieldwork component at 1:00 pm that will be live-streamed online. The Manitowoc River will be surveyed using Brendon’s DeepVision sonar to create a mosaic map of the river bottom. Any cultural remains will be noted and interpreted in a Phase 1 Archeological Survey Report that will be distributed to attendees.
This will be a FREE hybrid event. You may either attend in-person at the Wisconsin Maritime Museum or tune in to a live feed on our Facebook page.
