USS Hardhead made six war patrols during World War II and earned six Battle Stars. She sank nine ships for a total of 20,146 tons. Hardhead served in the Atlantic Fleet from 1958 through 1972 and earned four consecutive “E” awards by 1961. Stricken from the Naval Register in July 1972, Hardhead was transferred to Greece and renamed Papanikolis (S 114). She was used as a training vessel until 1993.
