Boy and Cub Scouts

While visiting the Wisconsin Maritime Museum and touring USS Cobia, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts have the opportunity cover some of the requirements for a number of different merit badges.

The cost for a day time admission is $5 per scout and leaders are free. Please make reservations at least two weeks prior to your visit. For more information about our Overnight Education Program visit the Overnight section.

Academics Belt Loop: Collecting

#3. Visit a show or museum that displays different collections: While visiting the Wisconsin Maritime Museum, scouts can learn about our collections of ship models and maritime related artifacts. The scouts can also learn how to properly display and care for their collections.

d. Find out where places of historical interest are located in or near your town or city. Go and visit one of them with your family or den. Visit the Wisconsin Maritime Museum to learn about our rich maritime history, World War II contributions, and tour the World War II submarine USS COBIA.

4b. Research an event of historical importance that took place in or near your area. If possible, visit the place. Tell your counselor about the event and how it affected local history. Describe how the area looked then and what it now looks like. USS Cobia was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1986 and is a memorial to the men and women who built 28 submarines in Manitowoc during World War II and the brave men who served on them.

#2.a. Visit a place that is listed as a National Historic Landmark or that is on the National Register of Historic Places. Geocaching

#7. With your parent's permission*, go to www.geocaching.com. Type in your zip code to locate public geocaches in your area. Share the posted information about three of those geocaches with your counselor. Then, pick one of the three and find the cache.
*To fulfill this requirement, you will need to set up a free user account with www.geocaching.com. Ask your parent for permission and help before you do so.

We have five GPS units that can be borrowed from our front desk. You can explore any of the ten maritime history caches that have been left in Manitowoc and Two Rivers and see special places in local maritime history while you search! Visit our Geocache page for more information!

Model Design and Building

#5a. Study aircraft, submarines, and naval ships for design ideas. Explore our Model Ship Gallery and naval models throughout the museum! AND if you have the time, plan your visit during our Annual Model Ships and Boats Contest every May. It's the longest running model contest in the Midwest!
